Warner Bros. | FRIENDS ’TIL THE END Coffee Table Book
Good friend and great client, Kevin Bricklin from Warner Bros., asked me if I’d be interested in submitting some designs for the final FRIENDS TV show coffee table book. Half-seriously he suggested, “You have never done a book, but you have strong design skills, so I thought I’d give you a shot. You probably won’t get it. [Chuckle.]”
That was all the encouragement needed as I bested all-comers to land this one-time deal: to conceive, art-direct and design page layouts for a book dedicated to one of the top-rated TV shows of all-time. I worked during the live tapings with a solid staff of photographers capturing images of how the show really comes together. My pagination/chapters concept was the key to getting this gig – digging deep into the show’s DNA beat out a simple timeline of episodic memories.
Aerie Pharmaceuticals | Glaucoma Journey
Michael Rowe hired me to wireframe and design some micro-sites for some pre-launch ideas of his. The culmination was GlaucomaJourney.com which is an informational website pertaining to Glaucoma.
Rusty Surfboards | Rusty Preisendorfer
Art Center College of Design. Graduation Day. The College President informed us: “It’s official. The country is in a recession. Good Luck.”
One morning during a surf, I ran into my high school teach turned design-maverick David Carson. He remarked on my surfboards custom graphics and invited me to meet Rusty Preisendorfer. Rusty loaded me up plenty of work — and still work on projects today, it’s been a good session.
Rich Roll – Jai Ultra – Epic5 | Rich Roll
I met Rich Roll when working with Zoot Sports – he came to us to model triathlon gear for an upcoming catalog. This was just as the newly plantpowered Rich had started in on what would become RICH ROLL. We hit it off instantly, talked design and that we both went to University in the Bay Area around the same time.
My studio designed Rich’s “Jai Ultra” kit for Ultraman – the epic three-day, 320 mile (515 km) triathlon race modeled on the original Ironman Hawaii. After that, we worked on his site, vegan nutritional products, photoshoots for his book “Finding Ultra” and chatted on the phone about Rich starting a podcast. Fast forward a decade and the RICH ROLL PODCAST is the go-to place for amazing content.
The Original E-Bike | Lee Iacocca
A quick phone call from premier bike-building genius Linn Kastan follows a rough-sketch fax depicting a bike frame with two boxes in it. “It’s electric,” says Linn, “think you can make it into something?” Another quick call to best friend and uber-designer Harald Belker and we’re off.
Oh, who’s this for? Soon we’re face-to-face with legendary car-man Lee Iacocca and at the start of a groundbreaking, five-year journey known as E-Bike. Considered the first consumer-friendly E-Bike and, unapologetically, the origin of the term “E-BIKE”, coined by Lee’s Executive Assistant Irene DiVito.
Harald Belker
Wikipedia states, “Harald Georg Belker is a German entertainment/automotive/product designer best known for his vehicle designs in films such as Batman & Robin and Minority Report. His designs range from fantastic entertainment designs to ergonomic user-friendly product design.”
I met Harald during our first term at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Yes, that Art Center. We became quick friends and I watched a friendly German transplant embrace the California lifestyle. We’ve worked on many projects together, including his website and I’m proud to call him a true friend.
CEP Compression | medi Germany
Brandt Furgerson hired Sandbox to help the European brand CEP get a better foothold in the U.S. We delivered strong visuals to graphically illustrate the scientific data associated with CEP’s superior product as well as video-documenting their stable of world class athletes.
We concepted and directed the launch of CLONE Custom Compression which Competitor Group called the freshest creative of they year. The U.S. version of the website we developed was so well received, we got a call from the CEO of medi, CEP’s $350mil parent, to say, “you humbled our German website”.
Zoot Sports – Triathlon
Sandbox was the agency of record for Zoot Sports as it moved from a great niche brand into a premier sports brand. Working with Brian Enge’s pointed leadership and Zoot’s newly-implemented team, the direction we headed was as solid is the work we produced.
We successfully introduced triathlon-specific footwear to the market as well as CompressRx, compression sportswear for endurance athletes, long before the competition.
prAna
Between 1994 and 2008, Sandbox and prAna were inseparable. 13+ years and $35m in annual sales later, Sandbox has given prAna it’s overall visual identity. In turn, prAna has defined Sandbox as a creative studio.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in true community with like-minded people. Though we parted ways officially in 2010 with the new corporation, we have mad love for the brand we helped breathe life into.
